Reading:
Students will continue to practice asking questions as well as making inferences about the characters feelings.Students will be reading the next story in the Jr. Great Books curriculum, “Chin Yu Min and the Ginger Cat”. While reading students will find evidence and use reasoning to explain how the evidence they selected supports their inferences. Students will take a comprehension assessment on the story on Thursday, Nov 7th. Writing: Students will be writing an expository story about the picture of themselves with their toys. Grammar/Vocabulary: Students will be learning about nouns and also three root words (hydr, aqua/aqu, mar/mer).. Students will have an informal quiz on both next week. You will see the list of words they will be working on listed on their homework packet this week. No WORDLY WISE or SPELLING this week!!! Math: Students will continue topic 1- Understanding Multiplication and Division of whole numbers. Students should start working with multiplication facts. Flashcards are a great way to do so! Science: Students will continue to analyze data gathered on the precipitation and temperature data collected from the island of Borneo. Students will be trying to determine which island will continue to be the best for the orangutan reserve. Social Studies: Immigration Spoons Project should be sent in by Monday, November 4th. Students will begin to present their spoons. Students will be writing a summary of their interview findings to help with their presentations. Students will finish reading their back to school novel, “A Boy Called Bat” by Elana Arnold. Students will review the major elements and events of the story. Students will discuss the theme of friendship in the book and then make a friendship flip book for themselves. Students will then complete the novel test on Friday, September 27th. Students will also start Wordly Wise this week. Writing: Students will be introduced to different hooks for starting a personal narrative. Students will practice writing hooks and then select one for their narrative. Math: Students will review the concepts presented and practiced in topic 8 and take the assessment on Tuesday, September 24th.Students will start Topic 9 mid-week. Science: Students will continue to explore weather and climate as meteorologists. Students will look at different locations around the world and compare the temperatures and rainfall data.Students will then share out their findings. Students will then use the information learned in chapter 1 of their investigation and write an email to the World Protection Organization explaining which island would be best for the Orangutans they are working to protect using evidence from their investigation. Students will continue working with their back to school novel, “A Boy Called Bat” by Elana Arnold. Students will be reading chapters 13-22. While reading this novel, students will be analyzing the different characters, as well as, discussing the differences that each of us bring to the classroom. Students will continue to focus on character traits, both internal and external, as well as continuing to ask questions this week. Good readers ask questions throughout reading to begin to make connections at a deeper level. Writing: Students will be introduced to narrative writing. Students will need to bring a picture of themselves participating in an activity (vacation, camp, play date, playing a sport, etc.) to assist in generating ideas for a personal narrative. Students should bring in a picture by Tuesday, September 17th. Math: Students will continue Topic 8 in their Envision curriculum. Students will be solving subtraction problems, estimating sums and differences, and beginning to relate addition and subtraction to each other. Science: Students will begin their first science unit on weather and climate. Spelling: Students will begin spelling this week. The words all have a short-a vowel pattern. Writing: Students will work on different writing activities this week to begin to build up their writing stamina. Students will write“I Am” poems to create word clouds, write about their summer break. Math: Students will complete some first day of school math projects that use numbers and equations to tell about themselves,and also begin to review place value. Social Studies /SEL: Students will review the Cougar Code and help come up with the norms and expectations/values of our classroom and talking circles. Science: Students will discuss the scientific method and complete an experiment that will require teamwork! Reading: Students will continue to explore and practice identifying different types of figurative language. Students have learned similes, metaphors, idioms, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, personification, and alliterations. We will be completing some fun crafts/activities to show understanding of the different types of figurative language. Also, please continue to encourage your child to use time wisely during silent reading time in class and take quizzes and record on their logs regularly. The more active reading your child does, the more they will learn!
Math: Students will be going over different topics that are either review from previous math topics or will not come up prior to testing. Students will go over 3D shapes, volume, money, probability, and adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers. There will be no math homework this week! Social Studies: We will be continuing the tour of the Midwest Region. Science: Introduction to Weather Unit Reading: Students will continue to explore and practice identifying different types of figurative language. Students have learned about similes and metaphors this past week, and will work with idioms, hyperboles, alliterations, and personifications this next week. Writing: Young Authors We will be continuing to work all week drafting our stories. As your child about the specific story elements they're including as they should know them well at this point._young_authors_2019.pdf Cursive Handwriting: All students received a Handwriting Without Tears workbook a few weeks ago and have been diligently practicing both upper and lower case letters. This is the plan for the remainder of the school year. Math: Topic 14 - Solving Time, Capacity and Mass Problems. Please continue to encourage your child to keep up with both their multiplication and division facts. Social Studies: We will be finishing up our tour of the Midwest with "stops" in Iowa and Dodge City, Kansas. Science: Science Fair Projects and wrap up of the Heredity Unit with a preview of our next unit on Weather. |
