Reading: We are excited to start Literature Circles this week. Your child has been assigned one of 5 Roald Dahl books. Students will be reading independently as well as working in small groups where they will have one of the following jobs which will rotate: Supper Summarizer, Character Expert, Word Wizard,Discussion Director, Creative Connector or Artistic Illustrator. We will focus reading actively (for details) versus passively. It is important that students keep up with daily reading assignments in order to successfully participate in the literature circle.
Reading/Technology- Every Friday, students will practice reading and answering various types of literacy questions on the computer to get them familiar and comfortable with scrolling back to the passage which they will need to do for the upcoming standardized tests. Sites utilized will be Newsela and Readworks.
Math: We will finish up Topic 11 this week with a lesson on math reasoning Monday, review stations on Tuesday and the test on Wednesday. Thursday will be the pretest for our next unit of study (Fractions) and Friday will be an introduction to fractions project as well as our weekly multiplication facts 3 minute drill. Please encourage your child to continually practice both their multiplication an division facts as fluency leads to math confidence.
Spelling; List C-7 /oi/ toys, annoy, point, noise, noise, boy, broil, joyful, join, soil, destroy, loyal, avoid, voyage, coins, voice, fruit, rescue, computer, enjoyable, poisonous. Students will have a spelling test on Friday 3/1. I'm encouraging students to work on incorporating both Wordly Wise vocabulary and spelling words into their everyday language as well as their writing.
Writing:This week we will begin a mini unit on writing a 5 paragraph persuasive letter with a hook/lead, 3 reasons and conclusion. Students will also be introduced to transition /linking words. They will begin by brainstorming things they'd' like to change about Coonley and write their persuasive letters to both Mr. Z and Mr. Laslo. Should be interesting...:) We will also continue working on "free writing" in journals to encourage fluency.
Social Studies: Continuing our study of Southeast Region, students will learn about and explore Everglades National Park, John F. Kennedy Space Center and Jamestown: Englands First American Colony.
Reading:We will be finishing up our Poster Projects in honor of Black History Month and look forward to teaching one another about the 12 accomplished African Americans we've studied. Students will be learning about the various roles necessary for a literature circle. By the end of the week each student will be assigned one of 4 Roald Dahl books for our next unit of study and literature circles will start the following week.
Vocabulary:Wordly Wise Lesson 6 (Review Thursday, Test Friday)
Math- Topic 11 Solving Multi-step Word Problems with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Writing-Students will complete their book reviews and begin brainstorming topics for writing Persuasive Letters to Mr. Z and Mr. Laslo
Science: Students will continue to explore/observe the different ways that organisms can be similar and different.
